Building work under way on the Squirrel Inn, Areley Kings
"Construction has begun to replace the former Squirrel Inn public house in Areley Common with 6 homes. Three of them will be built on the ground occupied by the Squirrel Inn and will retain its "locally listed" facade. Another house will stand alongside, facing on to the street, while two bungalows will be located to the rear in the former car park. Access will be from Areley Common only.
This development will be welcomed by the large majority of local residents who opposed Tesco's intention for the site, a supermarket.
The mobilisation of people power against the Tesco application was an example to other local communities faced with an unwanted development. Unquestionably, the volume of letters and emails expressing opposition had a huge impact on the opinion of the Planning committee. Crucially these letters stated good planning grounds for their views, and avoided "not-in-my-back-yard" sentiments. Attendance at two Planning Committee meetings was also impressive.
As organisers of two public meetings, publishers of two newsletters offering advice to objectors, and instigators of a petition, your local Labour councillors can claim some credit for this success.
However, greatest credit is due to every active citizen who made people power work.
